Health and Nutrition
Illnesses
- A child who is ill is not to be brought to the centre. The following are examples of illness symptoms:
- Temperature of 101 degrees F.
- Vomiting within the last 6 hours
- Contagious disease such as chicken pox or pink eye
- Unidentified rash
- Head lice
- If a child should become ill while at the centre, parents will be contacted immediately. Sick children will be isolated within my sight and/or hearing and made as comfortable as possible until a parent or caregiver arrives.Injuries
Injuries
- I have received training in First-aid and CPR as required by the Day Nursery Act, as well as training in the use of an Automated Electronic Defribulator and WHMIS.
- I will follow standard procedures for treating injuries.
- A head injury will be treated as a serious injury and parents will be notified as soon as possible.
- Superficial injuries will be washed out with soap and water and covered appropriately. Parents will be told of the injury upon arrival.
- If there is need for emergency medical treatment, 911 will be called and the child will be taken to the nearest emergency centre. Should an ambulance be needed, parents will be responsible for any costs. Parents will be contacted as soon as possible after 911 has been called.
- I am required to report suspected child abuse or neglect to the local authorities.
Smoking
- I do not smoke and no one in my home does either. Smoking is not permitted within or near the doors of the centre before, during or after operating hours.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
- To reduce the risk of SIDS I will take the following measures:
- Place the child to sleep on their back, unless written consent from the child’s physician
- Remove soft materials from the crib
- Cover mattresses in crib or playpen with snug fitting sheets
- Transport sleeping children from strollers or car seats to their back in a crib
Nutrition
- Starlite Children’s Centre strives to provide well balanced meals and snacks.
- Menus are planned around the changing seasons to combine in season fruits and vegetables each day.
- Around the World menu days are incorporated once a week to introduce a variety of different foods from different cultures.
- I provide a morning breakfast/snack, lunch, and afternoon snack daily.
- If your child has special dietary restrictions, whether medical or personal choice, or has food allergies please notify me in writing immediately.
Disinfecting
- Starlite Children’s Centre has the children’s best interest in mind each day, therefore a thorough cleaning and disinfecting of toys is done each day as well.
- Toys that are dishwasher safe do go into the dishwasher to be cleaned at high temperatures. Those that cannot be placed in the dishwasher are done by hand with soap and water and are sprayed with a disinfectant solution and allowed to air dry over night.
Self-care Routines
- At Starlite Children’s Centre, I encourage the children to complete the self-care routines every time they go to the wash room, are outside, wipe their nose or eat.
- The self-care routine also includes brushing the children’s teeth after lunch, before they go down for quiet time. I do provide individual tooth brushes and fluoride free toothpaste to use daily.
